Rubio Rambles

An ongoing conversation with friends and family

Featured Friend! September 29, 2008

We are very excited to introduce a new feature of our blog.  I’ve been thinking of ways to spice things up here.  I thought of my days in the classroom and how every week I featured one of my students.  And then I thought, why not do the same thing on the blog?

So…for our very first Featured Friend, we chose Christine, aka ate* Chris!!  We have known her for many years.  I still remember being excited when she and kuya Dave (her husband) would visit church (in SF) when they were living in LA.  As a kid, it was always a treat for me to see them.  And through the years they have been wonderful friends, allies and people Fran and I admire.  We have spent countless evenings in their cozy, artsy home by the beach talking about everything!  We love playing with their three kids and watching them grow.  It’s an honor to be their second-born’s godparents.

Ate Chris is the CEO of their household and is one busy mama!  She is creative, wise, spunky and easy to talk to.  Besides being a great wife and mom, she’s a pretty awesome photographer and graphic artist.  So, we present to you ate Chris!

Where is your hometown?  City by the Bay.

Do you still live there today?  Yes.  Living elsewhere made me appreciate my hometown so much more, fog and all!

What is one favorite memory growing up?

Even though my parents were overprotective, I had the best time in high school.  I was never allowed to go to any school functions (such as proms, picnics, dances, school shows) and even youth camps, but they allowed me to participate in school clubs, youth group meetings and choir.  It was then when my faith was challenged and my relationship with Christ grew.  It was then when friendships were formed, heartaches were met, cliques were “in” as it is now, talents emerged (I learned how to sew out of necessity).  I thoroughly enjoyed those years in spite of the hurdles and aches that came with it.  After all, life is much sweeter when sprinkled with adversities.

Name one person, besides family, that has had an impact in your life.  Why?

There are so many.  But one that stands out right now is my BSF teaching leader, JoAnn Hedges.  She not only teaches from the podium but from her heart.  She’s encouraged me in person, challenged me to grow, to speak in love and in truth.  All these, she exemplifies.  I’m sure she’s not perfect.  But I haven’t seen that side of her.

What is one ritual you must have each day?

Reading & cuddle/tickle time with my children.  I can’t tickle my eldest but we have a great time cuddling & talking.

If you could save only one possession, what would it be?

Besides my Bible, laptop, pen & paper, floss, toothbrush & wipes…my camera.  It helps me make time stand still, even for a brief moment.

What do people say you are good at?  Getting people together/organizing events.  Now if I can only organize my life =)

What inspires you?

My children.  If I could just have a pint of Tomato’s talent & brain, a quart of Kiwi’s tenacity & strength, and a bottle of Mango’s energy & wit, who knows where I’d be =)

Who would play you in a movie?  Elizabeth Swann with William Turner =) but I wouldn’t be cast for it.  I’m not very ladylike.  I’d probably cast better as one of those high-kick flying martial art leading ladies “hi-yahhhh!” like Michelle Yeoh or Zhang Ziyi.  That would get me in good shape…

We know you love a good quote.  Give us one or more that describes you.

You have a lifetime to work, but children are only young once.  ~Polish Proverb (so true…)

It’s not only children who grow.  Parents do, too.  As much as we watch to see what our children do with their lives, they are watching us to see what we do with ours.  I can’t tell my children to reach for the sun.  All I can do is reach for it, myself.  ~Joyce Maynard  (yep!)

Don’t say you don’t have enough time.  You have exactly the same number of hours per day that were given to Helen Keller, Pasteur, Michaelangelo, Mother Teresea, Leonardo da Vinci, Thomas Jefferson, and Albert Einstein.  ~Life’s Little Instruction Book, compiled by H. Jackson Brown, Jr. (I shouldn’t complain…just prioritize)

Ate Chris, thanks for giving us a small glimpse into your life/mind/heart!

Family and Friends – watch out, YOU might be next!!

*For the non-Taglaog speaking reader:  “Ate” is a term of Philippine kinship used for an older sister.  Though individuals may not be related the use of this term is widely used.  This is because Filipinos consider others outside of their families as relatives also.

Top 5… September 25, 2008

…most irritating things that happened today:

1) ONE hour late for a meeting with someone for work because I got inextricably lost

2) Dropped my expensive, delicious sandwich in the car

3) Blood sugar dipped drastically which led to a dull headache that lasted all day

4) Ruined my favorite pair of shoes due to rushing about AND being clumsy

5) Had to leave the husband stranded because I ran out of time and couldn’t pick him up on time

I can totally relate to this guy.

As most of you know (the two of you that read this blog), I went to Anchorage, AK for work last week.

When we were sightseeing, I was enjoying the scenery too much to take any pictures.  I apologize ahead of time for the random pictures and no beautiful Alaskan scenery.

My two travelling companions: Ken and Roger (the two guys in charge); my dorky picture.

Why do I look so deliriously happy?  It’s just a skeleton for crying out loud.  Plus, it makes me look even chubbier!

Speaking of chubby, of course I’m going to show you the food!  We visited the Hotel Captain Cook for a special breakfast - sourdough pancakes and reindeer sausage (yum!).  And a seafood extravanganza for dinner (don’t worry I shared!) at the Sourdough Mining Company.

Ta Dah!!! September 21, 2008

Well its about time you heard from the other half of the Rubio Rambles duo.  Ahem…the not so pretty half.  Though my wife has done a superb job holding down the fort, I thought it might be nice to share the burden of the blogosphere with her.  Since this is the first post I’ve done, I should probably share some lessons I learned in our first year of marriage.

I think this picture sums it up pretty well, and in true Rubio Rambles fashion…the reasons why come on a list:

Lesson 1:  It’s not always easy to see eye to eye.  In fact the Lord has done such a good job in making people one-of-a-kind, with different temperaments and preferences, that more often than not we won’t see eye to eye.  Olive and I are no exception to this.  Our perspectives, sometimes, are very different but we have been learning that we can still be at peace with each other even when our ideas and thoughts are polar opposites.

Lesson 2:  Marriage really does change your outlook.  If you noticed in the picture I’m looking through a telescope.  And if you look through a telescope, things tend to look a lot bigger.  No duh, right?  Well I’ve noticed that since I’ve gotten married, my tendency is to look at certain situations and make them bigger than they really are.  Perhaps it’s the needless pressure that I put on myself to carry all of the responsibility for the successes and failures that come our way.  While it sounds silly even as I am writing this down, this process seems impossible to escape sometimes.  Olive definitely does her part in trying to divert my intense focus on trying to “fix” titanic problems and to see things at their correct proportions.

Lesson 3:  Sometimes a gentle touch is all you need.  With my hectic schedule of work, school, and husbanding, yes I know it’s not a true word, I find myself literally spent by the end of each night.  Olive’s gentle hug or rub on the back are more than enough to ease the tension…at least until the next morning.

Lesson 4:  The Lord is good and always there.  When times get pretty dim, it is so comforting to know that the Lord is there to provide enough light for us to find our way even when we are not mindful of it.  Like the Coit Tower behind us, the Lord provides a constant guiding light, not too dim and not too bright, for us to benefit from.

Lesson 5:  I need to lose weight!  Dude I look good in that picture, as does my wife.  That was a little more than a year ago, and about 20 pounds ago.

Well, overall the Lord has been very gracious to us.  He has blessed us with His provision (thank you to all that have helped us).  He has blessed us with our family in the Bay and a new, growing, family here in Portland.  And He has blessed me with an awesome wife.

Lazy Sundays September 14, 2008

Filed under: Friends, Olive's Rambles, Portland, Top 5 — rubiorambles @ 11:29 pm

The top 5 things I love about Sundays:

1) Pearl Church

2) Hot Lips Pizza

3) Afternoon naps

4) Time with friends

5) Slow dinners

Speaking of my favorite things, tonight we went over Brett and Stacie’s and Fran grilled some steak and made his famous mashed potatoes.  We had a great time choppin’ it up and watching baby Moses.

Afterwards, the cool night breeze beckoned us to stay out a little longer and we went to get some gelato.

As we walked and enjoyed our melting dessert, I felt thankful for days like this – resting in the Lord, enjoying community with friends and savoring simple times together.

This post is to dispel any notion that only Fran cooks.  Here is Exhibit A – the yellow chicken curry with potatoes, onions and garlic (and brown rice, of course) that I cooked the other night…

Of course, he made BBQ ribs the night after so…I still have to concede to him as the chef  of the house.

But hey, at least I cook sometimes!

New playmates September 9, 2008

If you know us at all, you know that we love kids!  We come from tight-knit families and we were both teachers, so it’s only natural that we would love them.  Besides, they keep us young…but I guess some people might replace “young” with “immature.”

So, after having 12 nieces and nephews to hang out with, 12 godchildren to visit, and being surrounded by students (old and new) ranging from preschool to highschool back home…there was definitely a void when we moved up here.  Needless to say, Fran and I missed holding chubby hands, kneeling down and listening to miniature voices and endlessly (and lovingly) teasing pre-teens, tweens, teens, and early college ”kids” we saw on a regular basis.  Okay - I know you college folk aren’t kids anymore.  But you’ll always be those roly-poly, toddling babies to me.  Wow, I am getting old…I remember when people used to say that to me!

But, I digress…

We have met some wonderful adults and we are so thankful for how God has blessed (nay, spoiled) us with good friends up here.  But, we miss kids!

And then we went over to the Roth’s house and hung out with Asher and Phoebe (and their mom and dad too).  Here again were chubby hands to hold, endearing smiles and a miniature voice with very profound three year old musings.  This brother and sister team are so darling!  And their parents are great too.  I wish I had pictures – but I’m sure we’ll see them again soon and we’ll have more photo opportunities!

As we said our goodbyes, Asher emerged from the kitchen and after giving us warm hugs announced, “When I was hugged Francis, I felt a little sad.  But when I hugged Olive I was happy again.”  See, I told you he was profound.  You don’t often meet three year olds who have the capacity to express their bittersweet feelings over a farewell…

And this is why I love kids.  They are not only a tremendous blessing from God…being with them gives me new eyes and a new perspective.  They give me hope and remind me that there is always something to marvel at.  And Asher and Phoebe reminded me last Saturday that making friends is easy.

Their unchecked joy and trusting hearts remind me that as a child of God I should be the same way.  When my heavenly Father beckons to me – as He always does - I should run to be with Him.  I should be sad when I leave His presence, and happy when I realize He is there waiting to envelop me in His grace.

Wicked! September 2, 2008

I finally cashed in on my birthday gift!  This weekend we went to LA to watch Wicked.

Here’s my Top 5 for the weekend:

1) Elphaba (Teal Wicks) and Glinda (Erin Mackey) – their duets were exhilirating, sad and touching

2) Seeing the Tibayans and their adorable boys

3) Reading into the wee hours

4) People watching – LA is truly fascinating

5) Getting stuck in the hotel bathroom – this ordeal got us two free meals and a free night’s stay!

Here are some more highlights in pictures:

LA traffic – okay, not necessarily a highlight, but interesting because it is so inevitable

Tommy’s Burgers – a local fave…I can see why!

Baby Z just chillin’

The view from Santa Monica Pier

Strolling with our youngest godson, little X

Watching the waves with Ninong

The end of our short (but sweet) visit with good friends

Who knew this existed?  Read this if you’re interested…or confused (as we were)!

The Capitol Records Building (Beastie Boys, Coldplay, Corinne Bailey Rae)

Inside the lobby at the Pantages Theatre

Mingling and waiting for the show to start

The beautifully intricate ceiling inside the theatre

The Wicked stage right before the show started (my last picture before the usher threatened to throw people out who were taking pictures…oops!  I didn’t know!)

One last view of the theatre before we left for the night – satisfied and impressed, but sad it was all over

Getting a shot of Grauman’s (aka Mann’s) Chinese Theatre as we cruised Hollywood Boulevard

Fran poring over the humongous menu at Canter’s Deli -another local fave, as we grab a late-night meal

A glimpse of where the affluent, designer-hungry, botox-infected people play…and shop.  And where the non-affluent, bargain-hunting, naturally-aging people (e.g. us) gleefully gawk.

As we walked on Robertson Boulevard (by the way, kitson didn’t impress much), I couldn’t resist getting a shot of the famed Ivy Restuarant, where the celebrities come to see and be seen.

So all in all, it was a fun, relaxing, thrilling weekend.  Fran and I got to hang out with friends and family (Fran’s brother, wife and three daughters were in town too), see a great show, eat lots of junk food, and read/finish books.  We also got to experience the many sides of LA – the ethnic diversity (yeah!), the night-life (from a distance), the paralyzing traffic, and the glamour (old and new) of Hollywood.

We had a blast, but it was nice to come home to cooler weather, crisper/cleaner air and friendlier drivers.
